Mogadishu (SONNA) – President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, delivered a comprehensive address to the nation on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of independence and unity at the Mogadishu Stadium. In his speech, he provided an overview of the current state of the country and underscored the nation’s relentless pursuit of freedom. The President also highlighted the Somali people’s aspirations to build a nation that stands shoulder to shoulder with other countries in the region and the world.

Somalia’s Independence and the Scourge of Extremism

The President stated in his address that the Somali population has become acutely aware of the scourge of terrorism and its painful occupation within the country. They have witnessed the devastating impact it has had on their lives, including the loss of loved ones, as well as the distortion of their religion, Islam. The President emphasized the renewed hope of completely defeating terrorist groups through the second and final phase of the operation against terrorism.

“These extremists have carried out economic sabotage, denying our people their freedom and the right to practice their religion. They have mercilessly killed religious scholars who were teaching the true essence of our faith and our brightest minds.

Progress is hindered in the face of turmoil. The President lamented the destruction of mosques, targeted attacks on religious scholars, and the assassinations of community leaders. The recent bombing and destruction of the Daru-Naeem Mosque were perpetrated by individuals who have lost their humanity. He questioned the motives behind such heinous acts and what these perpetrators hope to achieve or gain by committing them.”

Security Self-Sufficiency:

The President announced to the Somali public that the national army has taken over initial bases from the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) forces. Comprised of troops from supportive African nations, these forces have played a pivotal role in securing our country over the past decade. This significant development signifies the achievement of security self-sufficiency.

Federalism and the Fight against Corruption

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stressed the importance of cooperation between the government and the people for the progress of the country. He emphasized the need to establish a balanced relationship between the federal level and regional governments. The central government remains committed to improving the economy, combating terrorism, ensuring security, strengthening the constitution, and promoting economic development.

The Role of the People of Somaliland in Independence and Unity

The President acknowledged the historical aspirations of the people of Somaliland for independence and peace, highlighting the Federal Government of Somalia’s willingness to engage in dialogue to address their grievances.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed his appreciation for the various cities in the country, particularly Laascaanood, for their significant role in commemorating the day of independence and peace on July 1st.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s address underscored the importance of addressing extremism, fostering unity, and building a strong state. The Somali people were urged to remain resilient in the face of challenges, as the government is committed to achieving security, economic growth, and lasting peace. The President’s speech emphasized the collective responsibility of all citizens to work together for the betterment of Somalia and its people.
