Statement on the latest flash floods in lower Shabelle region

Mogadishu(SONNA)-Ministry of Humanitarian affairs and Disaster Management of the Federal Republic of Somalia is concerned about the humanitarian implication caused by the flash floods due to the performance of above normal summer rains.

Nearly more than 37,000 people are affected in villages surrounding Balcad and Afgoye districts and displaced about 15,400 people as extreme heavy rains poured on regions in south-eastern coast of the country causing flash floods as well as river floods.

In Mogadishu alone,flash floods damaged or destroyed a number of housing units,while displacing 1,200 people.

Floods also disrupted business activities,communication networks and roads with in the city and has impacted community livelihoods.Flood risks still remain high in the above-mentioned towns and districts.

The affected local population who fled their homes to the dry and higher ground are now in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

“The needs of the affected communities are massive in regard to shelter,clean water,food,health.Therefore,we are calling upon our partners and all humanitarian agencies to quickly respond to this emergency situation and help the displaced people in those regions.”said,H.E.Minister Hamza said Hamza.
