The Somali Disaster Management Authority (SoDMA) has donated 3,000 tons of food and medicine to the Jubbaland State of Somalia, to help the people affected by the El Niño floods in Gedo Region.
The Chairman of SoDMA, Mr. Mohamud Maallim Abdulle, handed over the relief items to Gedo Regional Governor Abdullahi Shimbir and other Jubbaland Government officials at a ceremony held at the SoDMA on Wednesday.
Mr. Abdulle said that the aid was part of SoDMA’s commitment to support the Somali people in times of crisis, and expressed his solidarity with the flood victims.
He also praised the Jubbaland authorities for their efforts to cope with the disaster and provide assistance to the affected communities.
Governor Shimbir thanked SoDMA for its generous donation and said that it would make a difference in the lives of thousands of people who are in dire need of food and medicine.
He also said that the Jubbaland Government was working closely with the Federal Government of Somalia and other partners to address the challenges posed by the floods and to restore normalcy in the region.
The SoDMA has also provided Gedo Region with a new type of boat that was designed to rescue the people who were trapped in the floods.
The El Niño phenomenon, which causes changes in the weather patterns across the globe, has triggered heavy rains and floods in several parts of Somalia, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and destroying crops and infrastructure.
