Baku, Azerbaijan – SONNA – The Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU) has signed a historic agreement with the Azerbaijan Trade Union. This landmark agreement aims to bolster the protection and representation of workers’ rights in both countries.
During an official visit to Azerbaijan, SOCOTU Chairman Mr. Mohamed Osman Haji Ali and Deputy Chairman Hamda Osman met with the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Trade Union, Mr. Sahib Mammadov. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and building on the visit of the President of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, to Azerbaijan, marking a new beginning in economic cooperation and diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The Azerbaijan Trade Union shared a detailed report on ongoing reforms in the labor system, new initiatives to promote workers’ rights, and implemented and planned projects to support workers and social welfare. In turn, Mr. Mohamed Osman Haji Ali highlighted SOCOTU’s vital role in defending workers’ rights, social justice, and improving working conditions in Somalia.
The visit culminated in the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SOCOTU and the Azerbaijan Trade Union. This agreement focuses on strengthening cooperation to improve the lives of workers, defending workers’ rights and social justice, sharing experiences and knowledge exchange programs, and implementing joint projects on labor and social issues. During their visit, the SOCOTU delegation also toured the “Kurort” Tourist Center, learning about the modern system that allows trade union members in Azerbaijan to access tourism opportunities and social services.
The agreement heralds a new era in international trade union cooperation, ensuring the strengthening of workers’ protection and representation while fostering cooperation between Somalia and Azerbaijan in labor and social development fields. SOCOTU remains committed to promoting Somali workers’ rights through international cooperation with trade unions worldwide.
