Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, today inaugurated the Somalia Internet Governance Forum 2025 (SIGF 2025), marking the third annual edition of the forum held in Mogadishu.
In his opening remarks, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of maintaining national unity and stressed the need for a collaborative governance model (multistakeholder approach) to create a unified digital policy that benefits all citizens. He called on internet companies to ensure fair access to their services for the public and to prevent unhealthy competition that hinders the country’s overall progress.
“The Internet Governance Forum must produce tangible and actionable outcomes that can be presented at international technology discussions. In other parts of the world, internet use is regulated—people cannot use it without rules. Laws are in place to hold violators accountable. Unfortunately, our people have used the internet differently from the rest of the world, and it is our duty to correct this,” said the Prime Minister.
Remarks were also delivered by the State Minister of Communications and Technology, the General Manager of the National Communications Authority, and other officials who commended the progress in strengthening digital infrastructure and Internet governance. The event brought together representatives from government, telecom operators, universities, banks, and civil society organizations.
The Somalia Internet Governance Forum (SIGF) is an annual platform jointly organized by government institutions, the private sector, academia, and civil society to discuss and collaborate on Internet governance and digital transformation in Somalia, promoting partnership and public awareness of the country’s digital progress.
