Mogadishu, SONNA – The Federal Government of Somalia took a significant step toward improving the nation’s aviation infrastructure as Minister of Transport and Aviation Mohamed Farah Nuuh met with regional counterparts this week. The gathering brought together transport ministers from Hirshabelle and Galmudug states, along with the deputy minister from Southwest state, marking a collaborative effort to address critical aviation challenges.

During the meeting, officials engaged in detailed discussions about enhancing cooperation between federal and regional authorities. Key agenda items included plans for airport development across Somalia’s states, measures to facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods, and strategies to improve domestic air travel services. Minister Nuh emphasized the importance of this federal-regional coordination, stating it was essential for creating an integrated national aviation system.

The participants conducted a thorough review of current challenges facing regional airports and air traffic management. Officials shared operational difficulties and jointly explored potential solutions, with all parties agreeing to work collectively to overcome these obstacles. Particular attention was given to improving safety standards and operational efficiency at regional airports that serve as vital transportation hubs for local communities.

The meeting concluded with several important resolutions, including enhanced collaboration on aviation security measures to counter potential threats from extremist groups. The officials also agreed to strengthen emergency response capabilities and improve coordination during humanitarian crises or medical evacuations. These measures aim to create a more robust and responsive aviation network throughout Somalia.

In his closing remarks, Minister Nuh reiterated the federal government’s commitment to developing all aspects of Somalia’s transportation infrastructure. “This meeting demonstrates our shared vision for a modern, efficient transport sector that connects our nation and supports economic growth,” he stated. The Ministry of Transport and Aviation confirmed these discussions represent the first phase of an ongoing collaboration, with follow-up meetings planned to implement the agreed-upon initiatives.

The gathering marks a pivotal moment in Somalia’s efforts to rebuild its aviation sector after decades of challenges. By fostering stronger partnerships between federal and regional authorities, the government aims to create an air transport system that meets international standards while serving the needs of all Somali citizens. Officials expressed optimism that these cooperative efforts will yield visible improvements in airport facilities and air services across the country in the coming months.
