Mogadishu, (SONNA) – 10 June 2026 –The National Communications Authority (NCA) and the National IPv6 Center, which is hosted by Jamhuuriya University of Science and Technology (JUST), today jointly held the National IPv6 Workshop, bringing together Internet Service Providers (ISPs), universities, ICT professionals, telecommunications and technology experts, and other key stakeholders to discuss the future of Internet infrastructure and the implementation of IPv6 in Somalia.
The workshop served as a platform to raise awareness of IPv6 adoption, strengthen collaboration among key stakeholders, and support Somalia’s digital transformation agenda by promoting the deployment of next-generation Internet technologies and enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure.
Delivering the opening remarks, Eng. Mohamed Ahmed Mohamud, Rector of Jamhuuriya University of Science and Technology (JUST), underscored the importance of preparing the next generation of ICT professionals to support Somalia’s digital future.
“Preparing the next generation of ICT professionals is essential for Somalia’s digital future. Universities have a critical role in advancing IPv6 knowledge, research, and innovation, and in equipping students with the skills needed to support the country’s digital transformation,” he said.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Mr. Mustafa Yasiin Sheikh, Director General of the National Communications Authority, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring Somalia keeps pace with global technological developments through the implementation of IPv6.
“Our vision has always been to ensure that Somalia does not fall behind the global technological transition. Today, we are planning not only for current Internet needs but also for future generations, ensuring they have access to modern technologies and are prepared for the continued growth of the digital economy. We are proud that what began as a vision for the National IPv6 Center has now become an operational reality supporting this journey,” he said.
During the workshop, experts delivered presentations on key issues in IPv6 implementation, including the critical need for a national IPv6 strategy; technical deployment and transition planning; policy and governance; IP address planning; and policy frameworks to support the successful adoption of IPv6 across Somalia.
