MOGADISHU, SONNA – In a recent exclusive interview with the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Fei Shengchao, painted a vivid picture of the historical ties between the two nations and China’s unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia’s peace, stability, and development.
Ambassador Fei traced the roots of the Sino-Somali relationship back a thousand years, highlighting the longstanding cultural and trade exchanges that have fostered a deep sense of mutual respect and understanding. Since Somalia’s independence in 1960, formal diplomatic relations blossomed, paving the way for tangible cooperation in various fields.
“During the golden 30 years,” the Ambassador remarked, “China proudly contributed to Somalia’s development by building 89 major infrastructure projects, including the National Theater, Sports Stadium, Banadir Hospital, and the crucial road connecting the South and North.” These projects stand as testaments to China’s commitment to Somalia’s progress and well-being.
Beyond infrastructure, China’s support has extended to crucial areas like natural disaster relief, humanitarian aid, and security assistance. Ambassador Fei emphasized, “China has consistently stood by Somalia, offering unwavering support in times of need.”
The recent lifting of the UN arms embargo on Somalia was met with warm congratulations from the Ambassador, who hailed it as “an important victory for the Somali people.” He acknowledged the Somali government’s tireless efforts in securing this pivotal decision, underscoring its significance for African unity and regional stability.
China’s commitment to peace and development in Africa remains unwavering. Ambassador Fei reiterated China’s full support for Somalia’s journey towards a brighter future, pledging, “We will continue to tirelessly support Somalia’s efforts to achieve peace, stability, and sustainable development.”
