MOGADISHU – The Minister of Defense for the Federal Government of Somalia, Ahmed Moallin Fiqi, held a significant meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, in Mogadishu on September 11, 2025. The high-level discussion focused on a range of topics aimed at deepening the cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the development of the Somali Armed Forces.

Minister Fiqi took the opportunity to praise the Chinese government for its continuous and long-standing assistance to Somalia. He acknowledged that China has been a strong partner for Somalia, not only in security matters but also in various humanitarian and development programs across the country. The deep-rooted relationship between the two countries, which established diplomatic relations on December 14, 1960, has evolved into a strategic partnership over the decades, with China consistently supporting Somalia’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The minister also highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration for strengthening peace and security, both in Somalia and in the wider region. He noted that meetings and partnerships of this nature are vital for modernizing the Somali military’s capabilities and fostering a stable environment necessary for national reconstruction.

Ambassador Wang Yu and Minister Fiqi’s meeting reflects the continued commitment of both nations to expand cooperation beyond security into areas such as economic development, trade, and human resources training. As Somalia works to rebuild its institutions and secure its future, these international partnerships are central to achieving its long-term goals of stability, peace, and prosperity.
