MOGADISHU (SONNA) — Advancing the institutional framework for human rights protection in Somalia, the Deputy Chairperson of the National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), H.E. Mohamed Harun Mohamud, held a high-level strategic coordination meeting today with the Ambassador of Switzerland to Somalia, H.E. Mirko Giulietti, in Mogadishu.

This critical executive dialogue focused extensively on the current operational landscape of human rights within the republic, assessing existing challenges while identifying immediate developmental opportunities. A primary objective of the consultation was to solidify bilateral cooperation and engineer advanced mechanisms to proactively safeguard and promote human rights standards across Somalia.

During the briefing, Deputy Chairperson Mohamed Harun detailed the current developmental phase of the Commission, explicitly noting that the institution is actively executing its foundational and capacity-building operations. He definitively assured the Swiss delegation that the Commission will operate with absolute independence and strict neutrality. Crucially, he confirmed the institution’s total alignment with international human rights frameworks, specifically adhering to the Paris Principles. The Deputy Chairperson emphasized the absolute necessity of constructing an institution that commands public trust and possesses the structural capability to execute its mandate with total transparency and efficiency.

In response, Ambassador Mirko Giulietti expressed profound interest in the Commission’s strategic roadmap and long-term institutional vision. He reaffirmed Switzerland’s aggressive commitment to supporting governance, the rule of law, and human rights initiatives within Somalia. Both delegations successfully agreed on the critical need for a sustained, high-level partnership anchored in continuous technical support, advanced capacity building, and proactive collaboration to systematically fortify the national human rights architecture.
