Mogadishu (SONNA) – Mr. Hussein Macalin, the National Security Adviser, recently announced that the ATMIS mission will conclude by the end of this year. A new mission is in the works, with its duration to be determined by the government.

In a private interview with the National Media, Mr. Hussein Ma’alin revealed that nine thousand soldiers who were part of the ATMIS operation have already left the country, and the remaining troops will depart by the end of December.

“The African Union forces have been active in Somalia since 2007, starting with the AMISOM mission, which concluded in 2022. ATMIS followed, and it is now set to end on December 31,” stated the National Security Adviser.

The upcoming mission, known as AUSSOM, responds to a request from the Somali government It will receive short-term support from the National Army, with a limited number of troops involved.

Mr. Hussein emphasized that this operation differs from its predecessors. The collaboration between the two armies aims to ensure a smoother transition, allowing skills and resources to continue benefiting the Armed Forces.

Importantly, the participants in AUSSOM operate independently of the Somali government. Once the new agreement is approved, specific arrangements will be made with the participating governments.

During the African Union meeting that endorsed this mission, Egypt and Djibouti expressed keen interest in playing a significant role. Other nations are also considering involvement, pending approval by the Security Council.

Mr. Hussein concluded his remarks, underscoring the importance of this mission for Somalia’s security and stability.
