MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Republic of Somalia has issued a formal statement expressing its deepest condolences on the passing of Said Mahmud Ahmed, widely recognized across the nation as ‘Said Sonna.’ He was a foundational figure in Somali journalism and a highly respected former Director of the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).

The official message of mourning was jointly released by the Minister of Information, H.E. Daud Aweis Jama, Deputy Minister H.E. Abdirahman Yusuf Omar Al-Adala, Director General Abdullahi Hayir Duale, and the entire administrative staff of the Ministry. The leadership extended their profound sympathies to his family, relatives, colleagues, and the broader Somali public who benefited from his decades of public service.

Said Mahmud Ahmed occupies a distinct place in the history of the national press. As one of the original founding staff members of SONNA, he played an instrumental role in establishing the state’s initial media architecture. During his tenure as Director, he initiated critical reforms and spearheaded the institutional development of the agency, ensuring its capacity to deliver essential news to the public.

Throughout his extensive career, the late journalist was highly regarded for his rigorous analysis of national security matters. He maintained a resolute and uncompromising position in the ideological and informational fight against extremist factions. His professional output consistently prioritized the public interest, advocating strongly for national unity and the stabilization of the country. His dedication leaves an indelible mark on the domestic media landscape.

The Ministry concluded its national address with prayers, asking Allah to grant the deceased Jannatul Firdows (Paradise), forgive his sins, and bestow patience and comfort upon his grieving family and the nation. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
