MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Minister of Ports and Marine Transport of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, officially signed a comprehensive maritime transport cooperation agreement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Friday. The accord was formalized with the Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser. This bilateral engagement establishes a formalized framework to deepen fraternal relations and strategic cooperation between the two nations, ensuring that joint maritime initiatives serve their shared economic interests while supporting sustainable, long-term partnerships.
A central component of this agreement extends beyond infrastructure development, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s critical role as a supportive partner to Mogadishu on the global stage. Minister Abdulkadir explicitly noted that the partnership serves to safeguard Somalia’s national sovereignty while firmly preserving its unity and territorial integrity. This diplomatic alignment sends a clear message regarding the inviolability of Somalia’s borders amidst regional geopolitical shifts and growing competition over the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden corridors.
On the economic front, the treaty is engineered to accelerate national growth by modernizing the port and maritime transport sectors. The framework prioritizes intensive capacity building, specifically targeting the operational efficiency and technical expertise of Somali professionals working within these maritime fields. By enhancing human capital and upgrading coastal logistics networks, the Federal Government aims to drive comprehensive development, positioning Somalia as a highly competitive and secure hub for international shipping.
