MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (SONNA) — The air at Aden Adde International Airport resonated with a sense of national accomplishment this afternoon as thousands of Somali citizens gathered to embrace International Referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan. Recognized as Africa’s Best Referee of 2025, Artan returned to Mogadishu to a reception that transcended typical protocol, serving as a powerful demonstration of the deep-seated respect and solidarity felt by the nation for one of its most accomplished individuals. The arrival of the referee was marked by the presence of high-level government officials, leadership from the Somali Football Federation, fellow referees, members of civil society, and a massive, cheering crowd of supporters who view his professional triumphs as a victory for the entire Somali collective.

This homecoming served as a crucial moment of national validation following the administrative controversy that prevented Artan from participating in the FIFA World Cup. Artan, one of the world’s top-rated officials, had been officially selected by FIFA to take charge of a World Cup fixture. However, he was denied entry to the United States at Miami International Airport last week. Speaking to The New York Times, Artan detailed an ordeal in which he was questioned by U.S. border officials regarding his documentation and career for 11 hours before being moved to a holding cell and eventually deported to Istanbul. He expressed deep disappointment, noting that he held the correct papers and a valid visa, and was simply trying to live the greatest dream of his career. While U.S. Customs and Border Protection cited “vetting concerns” for his inadmissibility, the decision sparked broad international backlash. England and Arsenal legend Ian Wright questioned the move, calling it a “World Cup of chaos,” while the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, offered his public support, stating that the incident would not mark the end of Artan’s career on the world stage.

Adding significant context to the situation, Manager Ali Shiine revealed to those gathered at the airport that the highest echelons of global football governance were deeply affected by the administrative outcome. He shared that FIFA’s top leadership, including their President, personally communicated their disappointment regarding the selection process and explicitly expressed their sadness that Artan would not be officiating at the tournament.

Expanding on the magnitude of this achievement, the Deputy Chairman of the Banadir Region, Yabooh, articulated the sentiment shared by many in the capital. He remarked that Referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has built a reputation and garnered a level of acclaim that effectively surpasses what he would have gained had he merely participated in the tournament. This perspective highlights the unique position Artan now occupies as a figure whose professional integrity and skill have made him a household name regardless of the formal tournament roster.

Member of Parliament Qaali Cali Shire also participated in the emotional welcome. She acknowledged that the international competition did not proceed as anticipated, and she took the opportunity to extend a warm and fraternal invitation to Artan, telling him to embrace his arrival home in his own country. Minister Fiqi extended a warm welcome to the referee, celebrating the pride he has brought to the nation. The Minister stated that the country honors Artan for his role in raising the Somali name to new heights on the global map, assuring him that his goals will continue to be realized as he advances in his career.

In a moving conclusion to the event, Referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan addressed his fellow citizens with humility and resolve. He promised to carry the Somali name higher in all his future professional endeavors and expressed his deepest gratitude to both the government and the Somali people for the massive show of solidarity they have provided him. For the youth of Mogadishu, Artan represents a tangible example of what is possible when resilience is paired with dedication. He has navigated the highest levels of international pressure with a calmness that has set a new standard for referees across the continent. By reaching the pinnacle of his profession, he has carved out a permanent space for Somalia in the global sporting arena, ensuring that the nation’s name is associated with the highest standards of fair play and professionalism. In the eyes of the public gathered today, he remains a symbol of a Somalia that is competing, winning, and earning its rightful place in the global arena.
