Somalia, IFAD Discuss Strengthening Livestock Sector and Resilience of Pastoral Communities

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — Director General of Somalia’s Ministry of Livestock, Forestry and Range of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Guuleed Abdijalil, met with the newly appointed IFAD Representative to Somalia, Mr. Thoodan Abdulkarim, to discuss strengthening cooperation and accelerating support for the country’s livestock sector.
The discussions focused on improving livestock health services and production, restoring and managing rangelands, expanding access to water for people and livestock, and strengthening the resilience of pastoral communities affected by drought, floods and climate change.
The two sides also discussed developing livestock value chains, expanding markets and trade, supporting women and youth engaged in livestock production, and increasing economic opportunities for rural communities.
The Ministry emphasized the importance of stronger cooperation between government institutions and IFAD to mobilize sustainable financing and projects that address the priorities of pastoral communities, particularly in livestock health, rangeland management, water, production and marketing.
