MOGADISHU, Somalia – The technical committees representing the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the Somali Future Council convened their first official meeting in Mogadishu on Wednesday. This preliminary engagement marks a critical step towards resolving political differences and establishing a unified framework for the country’s electoral model.
The session commenced in an atmosphere described by officials as constructive and cooperative, with both sides demonstrating a clear readiness to advance discussions on pivotal national issues. The meeting serves as a necessary precursor to the highly anticipated inclusive consultation between the government and opposition groups regarding the election modality.
Negotiations are scheduled to continue, with the second part of the technical meeting set for tomorrow, January 29, 2026. These preparatory talks are designed to lay the groundwork for the upcoming National Consultative Meeting, which is officially scheduled to open on February 1st. The impending high-level dialogue aims to bring together national leadership and opposition figures to finalize a consensus-based path forward for Somalia’s democratic processes.
