Mogadishu, Somalia – His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia today laid flowers at the iconic SYL Monument in Mogadishu. This solemn act was part of the national commemoration of May 15th, Somali Youth Day, marking the anniversary of the founding of the Somali Youth League (SYL) and their pivotal role in the nation’s struggle for independence.

On this significant occasion, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Somali youth, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the country’s ongoing development and their efforts in combating extremist Khawarij groups.

During his visit to the SYL Monument, the President paid a respectful tribute to the thirteen young founders of the SYL, who bravely spearheaded the movement that ultimately led Somalia to independence. He offered prayers for their enduring legacy and their profound impact on the nation’s history.

President Mohamud also took the opportunity to encourage all Somalis, both within the country and in the diaspora, to uphold the values of unity, solidarity, and sovereignty. He emphasized that these principles were fundamental to the SYL’s successful struggle for independence and remain crucial for Somalia’s continued progress and stability.

The commemoration at the SYL Monument serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role that youth have played and continue to play in shaping Somalia’s destiny. President Hassan Sheikh’s presence at this event underscores the government’s recognition of the importance of young people in national development and their dedication to preserving the spirit of unity and resilience that characterized the SYL’s historic journey.
