Baku, Azerbaijan – The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Mrs. Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoumi, held a pivotal meeting with the Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The high-level discussions took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, focusing on the critical agenda of developing the Somali National Meteorological Agency (SNMA) and fortifying Somalia’s climate preparedness.

The meeting underscored the importance of technical and operational support from the WMO to bolster the capabilities of SNMA. Emphasizing the need for robust early warning systems, the discussions aimed at equipping Somalia with advanced forecasting tools to raise public awareness about severe weather conditions and mitigate the impacts of climate-related disasters.

“Building a national meteorological system that aligns with international standards is paramount for Somalia’s sustainable development,” stated Minister Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoumi. “Our commitment is to create a resilient infrastructure that not only safeguards our citizens but also supports our nation’s growth.”

The collaboration with the WMO is poised to provide Somalia with the expertise and resources necessary to enhance its meteorological services. This includes the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies and training programs to empower local meteorologists and improve data accuracy.

The Secretary General of the WMO praised Somalia’s proactive approach to climate resilience and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting the country’s efforts. “The WMO is dedicated to assisting Somalia in building a resilient meteorological framework. Together, we can ensure that communities are better prepared for the challenges posed by climate change,” he remarked.

This meeting marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s journey towards climate resilience. By strengthening its meteorological agency and implementing advanced early warning systems, Somalia aims to reduce vulnerability to climate shocks and promote sustainable development.

The Minister’s engagement at the international level highlights Somalia’s dedication to addressing climate challenges and underscores the importance of global partnerships in achieving these goals. As the country continues to develop its climate resilience strategies, the support from international organizations like the WMO will play a crucial role in building a safer and more sustainable future for Somalia.
