On World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3rd, the world turns its attention to the essential role of free press in maintaining a well-informed society. This year, under the theme “Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” Mogadishu University’s Journalism and Communication students took a stand for the environment by planting trees on their campus. This act of green journalism is a testament to their commitment to environmental care and the crucial role of journalism in highlighting ecological issues.

Student journalists are the vanguard of positive and ethical journalism. They represent a new generation of reporters who are not only learning the ropes of the trade but also embodying the principles of responsible journalism. Student journalism acts as a microcosm of the real world, where open discussion, debate, and problem-solving take center stage. By engaging in journalism, students develop essential skills like effective communication, critical thinking, and research abilities, which are crucial in today’s information-rich society.

Journalism plays a pivotal role in environmental protection. It serves as a watchdog, holding entities accountable for their actions and policies that impact the planet. Environmental journalists work tirelessly to investigate and expose environmental injustices and violations, influencing policy and decision-making processes. Their reporting brings to light hidden issues fostering transparency and advocating for sustainable practices.

Mogadishu University, established in 1997, has grown from a small institution into one of the largest universities in Somalia and East Africa. Born from a vision to restore hope and bring about social change amidst the ruins of civil war, the university has become a beacon of hope for thousands of young Somalis. It continues to advance its strategic goal of becoming a leader in social and economic change, collaborating with government, academic institutions, civil society groups, businesses, and international organizations.

The tree-planting initiative by the Journalism and Communication students at Mogadishu University is more than just an environmental gesture; it is a symbol of the power of journalism as a force for good. As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, let’s recognize the vital role of journalists and journalism students in protecting our planet and shaping a desirable future for the Planet.
