Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s peacebuilding and stabilization efforts as Africans across the continent and the diaspora commemorate Africa Day.

In a statement marking the occasion, AUSSOM highlighted the importance of African unity, solidarity and collective action in advancing peace, stability and development across the continent, while praising Somalia’s progress toward recovery and state-building.

“Today, we join the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia (FGS), together with millions of Africans across the continent and in the diaspora, in commemorating Africa Day, a historic occasion that celebrates African unity, solidarity, and our shared aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity,” the statement said.

The mission noted that Africa Day carries special significance for Somalia and the African Union family, emphasizing that African nations have stood alongside Somalia for nearly two decades in support of peace, stabilization and reconstruction efforts.

“Africa Day holds special significance for Somalia and the African Union (AU) family. For nearly two decades, African nations have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Somali people in support of their journey toward peace, stabilization, state-building, and recovery. Somalia’s progress and resilience remain a testament to the strength of African solidarity and collective action.”

AUSSOM also paid tribute to Somali security forces, civilians and African Union personnel for their sacrifices in restoring peace and stability in the country.

“As we commemorate this important day, we recognise the sacrifices made by Somali security forces, the people of Somalia, and AU personnel who have worked tirelessly to restore peace and stability across the country. Their courage and commitment continue to inspire hope for a secure and prosperous Somalia.”

The mission reiterated its continued partnership with the Federal Government of Somalia in strengthening security institutions, supporting stabilization efforts and promoting sustainable peace and development.

“AUSSOM, working in close partnership with the FGS, remains committed to supporting Somali-led efforts to strengthen security institutions, promote stabilisation, protect communities, and create conditions for sustainable peace and development.”

The statement also praised Somalia’s resilience and contribution to Africa’s future, describing the Somali people as embodying determination, entrepreneurship and perseverance despite ongoing challenges.

“As Africa advances the aspirations of Agenda 2063, Somalia remains central to the continent’s vision of ‘The Africa We Want’ – an Africa that is peaceful, integrated, secure, and driven by its own citizens.”

AUSSOM further commended troop- and police-contributing countries serving under the mission, as well as international and regional partners supporting Somalia’s stabilization journey.

The statement concluded with a call for renewed unity and cooperation among African nations in addressing the continent’s shared challenges and building a future based on peace, opportunity and hope.
