Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E Daud Aweis Jama pointed out the crucial advantages of lifting the arms embargo starting with the counter-terrorism and security, National Defense, law enforcement and border control and state-building and governance.

The UN Security Council has voted to lift Somalia’s 31-year arms embargo, with 14 members in favor and 1 abstention. The FGS is grateful for the historic decision to adopt Resolution 2713 n anticipates that it will contribute 2 strengthening security and governance in the country

The United Nations Security Council’s decision to remove the three-decade arms embargo will bolster the government’s efforts to enhance security and stability. This move is expected to bring several advantages, including:

  1. Counterterrorism and security: Somalia has been grappling with significant security challenges, including the presence of extremist groups. The Somali Government needs access to modern arms and equipment to effectively combat these threats and maintain security within its borders.

The resolution 2713 of the UNSC included an arms embargo on the extremist groups such as the Kharijites of Al-Shabab, demonstrating continued commitment to combating extremism and promoting peace in Somalia.

“In a crucial move, the UNSC is also poised to re-impose an arms embargo on the Kharijites Al Shabab terrorist group, demonstrating continued commitment to combating extremism and promoting peace in Somalia,” Minister Daud said.

  1. National defense: The lifting of the arms embargo would enable the Somali government to build and modernize its armed forces, enhancing its capacity to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
  2. Law enforcement and border control: The Somali government needs the means to equip its law enforcement agencies and to secure its borders against illicit arms trafficking, terrorism, and other transnational threats.
  3. State-building and governance: Strengthening the Somali government’s capacity to provide security is essential for its efforts to establish stable governance, deliver public services, and promote economic development.
