Astana, (SONNA) — The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Kazakhstan, Amb. Fathudin Ali Mohamed, held high-level meetings in Astana with senior Kazakh energy officials to explore opportunities for cooperation in oil and gas exploration and development.
The discussions included meetings with Askhat Khassenov, Chairman of the Board of Management of KazMunayGas, and Sanzhar Zharkeshov, Deputy Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Talks focused on potential collaboration in the energy sector, particularly upstream activities, reflecting mutual interest in building a beneficial partnership between the two countries. Kazakh officials highlighted their strong technical capabilities, extensive experience in hydrocarbon exploration and development, and openness to international cooperation—especially in emerging energy markets.
Ambassador Fathudin presented Somalia’s oil and gas opportunities, both onshore and offshore, underscoring the country’s commitment to responsible resource development, transparent legal and regulatory frameworks, and engagement with experienced international energy companies.
Both sides emphasized the importance of geological exploration as a foundation for long-term cooperation, including the use of advanced technologies such as seismic data acquisition, high-level data analysis, and subsurface modeling. They also agreed on the value of knowledge transfer, capacity-building, and technical cooperation to support sustainable energy development.
The meetings concluded with a shared commitment to deepen dialogue and explore practical avenues for oil and gas cooperation, marking a positive step toward strengthening energy relations between Somalia and Kazakhstan.
