MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a disaster preventive move to mitigate the humanitarian risks associated with the upcoming Spring rains, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mohamud Ma’allin Abdulle, met with the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates, Ambassador Ahmed Juma Al-Rumeysi.
The meeting’s agenda centered on the urgent need to expedite the Emirate’s pledged support for the rehabilitation of the Sabun dam in the Jowhar district. The officials emphasized the critical nature of immediate waste removal, drainage, and financial aid for transporting donations to the Bay, Bakool, and Gedo regions. These measures are deemed essential to prevent or at least reduce the anticipated flood-related risks.
Expressing his gratitude, the Commissioner lauded the UAE Ambassador for his relentless efforts in collaboration with SoDMA to address drought and flood challenges and for reaching out to areas recently liberated from extremist groups. In response, Ambassador Al-Rumeysi assured that the UAE’s commitments, including the facilitation of aid through the ports of Mogadishu, Kismayo, Berbera, and Bosaso, have been approved and will be swiftly implemented.
This bilateral cooperation underscores the strong partnership between Somalia and the UAE, as both nations work hand in hand to prepare for natural challenges and bolster humanitarian assistance in the region.
