Mogadishu(SONNA)-Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, on Wednesday received a high-level delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP) at his office, led by Matthew Hollingworth, Assistant Executive Director for Programme.

The meeting focused on finding sustainable solutions to recurring challenges, including food insecurity, drought, flooding, and their lasting impacts across the country.

The Prime Minister briefed the delegation on the overall situation in Somalia, highlighting progress in security, politics, and development, as well as the effects of drought that have contributed to food shortages. He stressed the importance of long-term solutions, particularly as the enters the rainy season, and called for joint efforts to help pastoralists and farmers maximize productivity and reduce reliance on external aid.

Hamza expressed appreciation for WFP’s continued support, noting that Somalia is recovering from prolonged crises. He also underlined that the government has developed plans aimed at addressing the root causes of food insecurity and achieving self-sufficiency, urging international partners to support these efforts.

For their part, WFP officials commended the government’s progress in tackling recurring food insecurity challenges and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Somalia’s plans to achieve sustainable development and reduce dependence on humanitarian assistance.
