Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, recently convened a crucial high-level meeting with key stakeholders in the humanitarian sector. The gathering brought together donor representatives and heads of various United Nations agencies to address pressing humanitarian concerns in Somalia.

The primary focus of the meeting was the escalating drought situation affecting the Northern regions of the country, with particular emphasis on the dire circumstances in the Awdal region. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the impact of the drought and the urgent needs of the affected populations.

In addition to the immediate crisis, the meeting also included a review of Somalia’s Disaster Risk Management (DRM) policy. This review is a critical step in strengthening the country’s long-term capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from various types of disasters. The discussions likely centered on the effectiveness of existing policies and potential areas for improvement.

Furthermore, the high-level task force addressed the implementation of the SoDMA-UN transition roadmap. This roadmap outlines the collaborative efforts between the Somali government’s disaster management agency and the United Nations to ensure a smooth and effective transfer of responsibilities and enhance local capacity in disaster management.

During the meeting, Commissioner Abdulle underscored the critical need for a well-coordinated response to tackle the urgent humanitarian needs arising from the drought. He emphasized the importance of all stakeholders working together to ensure that assistance reaches those most affected in a timely and efficient manner.

Beyond immediate relief efforts, the Commissioner also highlighted the significance of investing in initiatives that strengthen community resilience. Building the capacity of local communities to withstand and recover from shocks is seen as a crucial element in mitigating the long-term impacts of disasters such as drought.

Moreover, Mr. Abdulle stressed the importance of enhancing the capacity of government agencies at all levels to effectively manage and respond to disaster situations. This includes providing the necessary resources, training, and infrastructure to enable government bodies to play a leading role in disaster management efforts.

The high-level meeting signifies the ongoing commitment of the Somali government and its international partners to address the humanitarian challenges facing the country. The focus on both immediate needs and long-term capacity building underscores a comprehensive approach to disaster management aimed at creating a more resilient Somalia.
