MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), in partnership with the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, has officially launched a groundbreaking campaign titled “National Safeguarding Initiative for Women Journalists.” The launch, held in Mogadishu, coincides with the global commencement of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

This timely initiative aims to address the specific challenges and safety concerns faced by female media professionals in Somalia. Under the theme “Establishing Safeguarding Measures for Women Journalists,” the program seeks to foster a media environment where women can work free from harassment, discrimination, and violence.

The two-day event brought together journalists, editors, and media directors from across the Federal Member States and the Benadir region. The discussions centered on the urgent need to reform newsroom cultures and implement enforceable policies that protect women.

Key Focus Areas

The initiative is built upon several strategic pillars designed to create lasting change within the Somali media landscape:

  • Ethical Reporting: Strengthening ethical, survivor-centered reporting on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to ensure dignity and accuracy.

  • Newsroom Safety: Creating safer and more inclusive newsroom environments that actively discourage harassment.

  • Leadership: Supporting women journalists as leaders and agents of change within their organizations.

  • Policy Reform: Advancing gender-sensitive editorial policies in media houses to ensure equal opportunities and protection.

During the opening ceremony, participants donned orange caps and scarves, symbolizing the bright future of a world free from violence against women. NUSOJ officials emphasized that the safety of women journalists is not merely a women’s issue but a fundamental component of press freedom and national development.

The initiative is supported by the Government of Canada through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, reflecting a shared commitment to gender equality and the protection of human rights. This collaboration highlights the international community’s recognition of the vital role Somali women journalists play in shaping the nation’s narrative.

As the 16 Days of Activism continues, this initiative serves as a call to action for media owners and the government to adopt concrete measures that ensure the safety and professional growth of women in the industry.
