Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Hassan Adan, convened a key meeting today with the Ministry’s Fisheries Monitoring and Control Center (FMC) to assess the status of maritime activity in Somali waters. The discussion focused on both licensed and unlicensed vessels, with the Minister calling for a comprehensive report on illegal maritime activity.
The FMC also presented new strategies to strengthen monitoring and protection of Somalia’s marine resources. Minister Ahmed stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to safeguard the country’s blue economy, urging authorities to remain vigilant against illegal fishing practices.
Additionally, the Minister was briefed by the Ministry’s Environmental Department on the growing issue of marine pollution, particularly the dumping of waste and sewage into the sea near Lido Beach. Large tankers discharging waste into the water pose a serious public health and environmental threat, the officials warned.
In response, Minister Ahmed ordered immediate action to curb pollution and enforce environmental regulations, emphasizing the need to protect both marine ecosystems and the well-being of coastal communities. He urged the department to develop proactive measures to prevent future environmental damage.
The meeting underscored Somalia’s commitment to preserving its marine resources. Minister Ahmed reaffirmed the Ministry’s determination to ensure all maritime stakeholders operate within the law, protect public assets, and uphold environmental integrity.
