Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Internal Security of the Federal Government of Somalia, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative to Somalia, Lionel Laurens, today co-chaired the Steering Committee meeting of the Joint Police Programme Phase II (JPP II) in Mogadishu.

The high-level gathering brought together senior stakeholders, including ministers from Federal Member States (FMS), Somali Federal Deputy Police Commissioner, representatives from the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom (UK), the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), police reform experts, and other key international partners.

The Joint Police Programme, which is jointly funded by the European Union Delegation to Somalia and the British Embassy in Mogadishu, is a flagship initiative aimed at building a professional, community-oriented police force that reflects the values of inclusivity and gender equality. The programme also emphasizes improving service delivery and strengthening the rule of law across Somalia.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Steering Committee officially endorsed the revised 2025 Annual Workplan and Budget, marking a significant step forward in the national effort to strengthen Somalia’s security institutions through coordinated federal and international support.

The JPP remains a cornerstone of Somalia’s security sector reform, aligning with the country’s broader goals of stability, federal cooperation, and long-term peacebuilding.
