Herder Families in Hilmo Area Appeal for Urgent Humanitarian Assistance Amid Prolonged Drought

Galkayo, SONNA – Herder families residing in the Hilmo area of Galkayo district have issued an urgent appeal for humanitarian assistance as prolonged drought conditions continue to devastate their livelihoods.

Residents report that the drought in the area has persisted for two consecutive years, severely affecting livestock — the primary source of income and sustenance for most families. The broader lack of rainfall across Somalia and the region has compounded the hardship faced by pastoral communities.

One resident, speaking to State Television, described the dire situation confronting the community.

The drought in the Hilmo area has persisted for two years, severely affecting our lives and livestock. We also lack basic infrastructure, including roads and hospitals, which makes our situation even more difficult,” said one resident speaking to State Television.

Community members highlighted the additional challenges posed by limited infrastructure, including the absence of accessible roads and healthcare facilities, which further exacerbates their vulnerability.

Local families are calling on government authorities, humanitarian agencies, and development partners to provide immediate support, including water access, food assistance, healthcare services, and long-term infrastructure development to strengthen resilience against recurring climate shocks.
