Mogadishu (SONNA) – The Chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, has announced the successful and peaceful conclusion of voting for the Benadir Regional Local Council elections, which began at 6:00 a.m. and officially closed at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Speaking to the National Media shortly after the polls closed, the Chairman said the voting process was conducted calmly and orderly, with a strong turnout from citizens across all segments of society, including elders, youth, women, and political leaders, who cast their ballots smoothly throughout the day.

Chairman Abdikarim stated that the vote-counting process will begin in the coming hours and will be carried out transparently, in the presence of representatives from political organizations, civil society groups, and members of the international community. He emphasized that the Electoral Commission will provide regular updates to the public as the counting progresses.

“Voting concluded peacefully this evening, and the counting of ballots will now begin. Observers and international representatives will be present throughout the process, which is expected to take a short period of time,” he said.

In closing, the Chairman expressed his appreciation to the Somali Police Force, election staff, national and independent media, voters, and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful and transparent conduct of the elections.
