House of the People Advances Key Legislation on Rights, Governance and National Interests

Mogadishu, (SONNA)— The Speaker of the House of the People, H.E. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, chaired the 5th sitting of the 8th session of Parliament, where lawmakers considered several key legislative and national-interest matters.
The House conducted the First Reading of the BBNJ Agreement, an implementing agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) concerning the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Lawmakers were also presented with four new draft laws covering Family Affairs, Children’s Rights, the establishment of the Somali Scholars Council, and rape and other sexual offences.
Parliament also circulated the Third Reading report on proposed amendments to Part Six of the National Procurement Law, as lawmakers continued consideration of legislation aimed at strengthening citizens’ rights, national interests and state institutions.
