Mogadishu (SONNA) – The Federal Republic of Somalia has officially joined the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), a voluntary framework established by the African Union to promote good governance, transparency, and the quality of public institutions across member states.
Somalia’s accession was formalized during the 35th Summit of the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government, where President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for membership. The move signals a national-level commitment to advancing state reform and strengthening governance systems.
The APRM is not an external oversight mechanism imposed on countries. Rather, it is a self-assessment and peer review process through which governments voluntarily subject their policies, institutions, and administrative systems to evaluation. The aim is to identify progress made, pinpoint areas requiring reform, and encourage accountability, knowledge-sharing, and constructive comparison among African states.
Somalia’s decision to join the APRM underscores the Federal Government’s determination to consolidate democracy and good governance, build transparent and accountable public institutions, strengthen responsible economic management, and promote inclusive social development.
The step also reinforces Somalia’s role within the African Union’s institutional architecture and aligns with the aspirations of Agenda 2063, “The Africa We Want,” reflecting ongoing efforts to entrench peace, stability, and sustainable development.
Somalia’s accession to the APRM marks a significant milestone, demonstrating the country’s readiness to actively participate in continental peer processes and contribute meaningfully to the promotion of good governance and African cooperation.
