Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Defense of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Macallin Fiqi, has said that senior Al-Shabaab terrorists are directly contacting the government, expressing their willingness to surrender and requesting amnesty.
“Senior Al-Shabaab terrorists are reaching out to us, seeking to surrender and asking for amnesty after losing their safe havens,” Minister Fiqi said.
The minister noted that these developments come after the group came under sustained pressure and lost areas of refuge due to ongoing military operations conducted by the Somali National Armed Forces, with support from international partners.
He added that the government remains ready to receive anyone who renounces extremist ideology and takes advantage of rehabilitation and amnesty programs, allowing them to reintegrate into society.
