Somali–Algerian Relations: Towards a Renewed Partnership in Security, Development, and Education

The Federal Republic of Somalia and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria continue to strengthen their long-standing bilateral relations through the official visit of His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Algeria, at the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The visit marks an important step in enhancing joint cooperation in the fields of security, trade, and education, and in revitalizing diplomatic engagement between the two countries amid rapidly changing regional dynamics.

The visit reflects the commitment of both sides to deepen the fraternal ties that unite the Somali and Algerian peoples—two nations bound by a shared history of anti-colonial struggle and a strong sense of belonging to both the Arab and African spheres. It also crowns a series of renewed political engagements over recent years, during which Somalia has regained its regional standing and Algeria has reinforced its diplomatic presence across the African continent.

In the field of security, the talks between the two countries carry particular importance. Both sides aim to exchange expertise in counterterrorism and the fight against violent extremism, while strengthening the capacity of their security institutions to promote stability in both the Horn of Africa and the Sahel region. Algeria is recognized as a pioneer in security strategies and national reconciliation, offering valuable experience for Somalia, which continues to wage a comprehensive campaign against extremist groups.

Economically, new horizons are opening for joint investments, trade exchanges, and the activation of cooperation agreements between the two nations’ chambers of commerce. The visit is also expected to explore opportunities for establishing direct air and maritime routes to boost trade and facilitate the movement of people and goods between Mogadishu and Algiers.

In the education and cultural sectors, Somalia seeks to enhance cooperation with Algerian universities, enabling Somali students to pursue higher education in Algeria, particularly in fields such as medicine, engineering, and political science. Algeria is highly regarded in Somali circles for its continuous support of Arabic and Islamic education across Africa.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Algeria goes beyond protocol—it represents a turning point in Somali–Algerian relations and an opportunity to establish a strategic partnership based on shared interests and mutual growth in the areas of security, development, and education, serving the two brotherly nations and the broader African continent.
