Somalia and UK Conduct Joint Assessment to Boost Border Security

MOGADISHU – The Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) and a delegation from the United Kingdom conducted a two-day joint assessment visit to enhance cooperation on border management and security. The visit, which took place from September 30 to October 1, 2025, focused on evaluating and strengthening security infrastructure and travel procedures in Somalia.

This visit was a direct follow-up to a previous trip by ICA officials to the UK in July 2025, where the two sides initiated discussions on securing borders and managing immigration. The UK delegation’s reciprocal visit allowed for a practical, on-the-ground assessment of progress and operational systems.

During the visit, ICA Director General, Mustafa Duhulow, highlighted the significant changes the agency has implemented in immigration and border security. He emphasized that strengthening international partnerships is essential for expanding the agency’s capabilities to protect the country’s borders, prevent illegal immigration, and combat organized crime. The Director General expressed his gratitude for the UK’s continued support.

The assessment program included a detailed review of the operational procedures at Aden Adde International Airport’s international, domestic, and VIP terminals. The delegation also evaluated the inter-agency cooperation among government bodies working at the borders.

The UK delegation confirmed its strong commitment to supporting Somalia in modernizing its immigration systems, providing training, and collaborating on security and border management. The visit concluded with both parties agreeing on clear next steps to advance their shared goals. The UK Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, and Director General Duhulow were present at a dinner to mark the conclusion of the successful visit.
