Mogadishu – In a concerted effort to address the severe drought affecting Somalia’s Awdal region, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mohamud Moalim Abdulle, held a crucial meeting on Wednesday with religious scholars, business leaders, and representatives from the country’s banking and telecommunications sectors. The gathering, held at SoDMA’s headquarters in Mogadishu, focused on mobilizing urgent humanitarian aid for the affected communities.
Commissioner Abdulle outlined the dire situation in the Awdal region, announcing that the Federal Government has already allocated $700,000 for humanitarian relief. He called on the nation’s business community to match this contribution, emphasizing that a collective effort is essential to providing effective and widespread assistance to those suffering from the drought.
During the meeting, religious scholars present encouraged business leaders to fulfill their ethical and religious obligations to help the needy, highlighting the importance of charity and solidarity in times of crisis.
In a show of support, the business and religious leaders pledged to actively participate in the relief efforts and committed to ongoing collaboration with SoDMA. They also requested a follow-up meeting to strategize on next steps and develop a plan for raising additional funds for the region.
This initiative is part of SoDMA’s continuous efforts to preemptively respond to natural disasters across the country. The meeting marks a significant step in fostering public-private partnerships to tackle the humanitarian challenges posed by the ongoing drought in the Awdal region.
