Ankara, Turkey – On July 17, 2025, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, visited the Özdemir Bayraktar Technology Center, the hub of Baykar Technologies, a leading Turkish manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The visit, which underscores the strengthening ties between Somalia and Turkey, was warmly received by Selçuk Bayraktar, the Chairman and CTO of Baykar Technologies.

President Mohamud’s visit focused on exploring advancements in drone technology, particularly Baykar’s renowned Akinci TB2 drones, which Somalia recently acquired to bolster its security operations. The Akinci TB2, known for its long-range capabilities and advanced surveillance systems, is expected to play a critical role in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to combat insurgent groups like Al-Shabaab and enhance national security.

During the visit, President Mohamud was briefed on the cutting-edge technologies developed at the center and their applications in modern defense strategies. Selçuk Bayraktar, a key figure in Turkey’s drone industry, personally welcomed the Somali delegation and highlighted the potential for deepened technological cooperation between the two nations. Discussions reportedly centered on further collaboration, including training programs for Somali forces to operate and maintain the UAVs effectively.

This visit marks a significant step in Somalia’s push to modernize its military capabilities with support from international partners like Turkey. The acquisition of Baykar’s drones is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Somalia’s defense infrastructure and secure its territories from ongoing threats.

President Mohamud expressed gratitude for Turkey’s continued support, emphasizing the importance of such partnerships in fostering peace and stability in Somalia. The visit concluded with a commitment to explore additional avenues for technological and defense cooperation, reinforcing the strategic alliance between Mogadishu and Ankara.
