Ankara, Turkey – On July 17, 2025, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, visited the Özdemir Bayraktar Technology Center, the hub of Baykar Technologies, a leading Turkish manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The visit, which underscores the strengthening ties between Somalia and Turkey, was warmly received by Selçuk Bayraktar, the Chairman and CTO of Baykar Technologies.
President Mohamud’s visit focused on exploring advancements in drone technology, particularly Baykar’s renowned Akinci TB2 drones, which Somalia recently acquired to bolster its security operations. The Akinci TB2, known for its long-range capabilities and advanced surveillance systems, is expected to play a critical role in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to combat insurgent groups like Al-Shabaab and enhance national security.
During the visit, President Mohamud was briefed on the cutting-edge technologies developed at the center and their applications in modern defense strategies. Selçuk Bayraktar, a key figure in Turkey’s drone industry, personally welcomed the Somali delegation and highlighted the potential for deepened technological cooperation between the two nations.
