Mogadishu, Somalia, SONNA– Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud today inaugurated a National Consultation Forum aimed at fostering national unity and addressing critical aspects of the country’s political landscape, including constitutional completion, the electoral process, counter-terrorism efforts, and overall statehood.
In a speech delivered at the forum, President Mohamud highlighted the government’s commitment to establishing a direct electoral system, allowing the Somali populace to directly elect their leaders. He noted a consensus among political parties, spanning both opposition and conservative factions, against reverting to the indirect electoral methods that have previously undermined election transparency and democratic principles.
“This forum reflects our dedication to incorporating diverse perspectives on the path to statehood,” President Mohamud stated. “Our government is actively seeking dialogue and consultation, a practice that has been lacking in the nation’s leadership and government in the past. The door for consultation and dialogue is open, and we encourage everyone to participate in the statehood process we are striving for.”
Acknowledging the support received from international partners, President Sheikh emphasized that the ultimate responsibility for achieving complete statehood rests with the Somali people and its political actors. “The global community has provided significant support, but the core work remains with us – we as Somalis must truly embrace ownership of our country’s future,” he asserted.
Former Heads of State, federal and state officials, prominent Somali leaders, and scholars who participated in the forum voiced their support for the government’s vision of national solidarity and pledged their commitment to building an inclusive state. They emphasized that this unified approach would serve as the foundation for lasting peace, justice, and sustainable development within Somalia.
The forum marks a significant step in the Federal Government of Somalia’s efforts to engage a wide array of stakeholders in shaping the nation’s political trajectory.
