Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, officially launched the National Consultative Conference, urging the Somali people to strengthen national unity and cohesion. He emphasized the importance of avoiding actions or rhetoric that could divide the public.
In his remarks, President Hassan Sheikh reiterated his government’s commitment to transitioning Somalia to a one-person, one-vote electoral system—a key national objective. He underscored that both the opposition and the ruling party agree that returning to an indirect electoral model, which has been fraught with challenges, is not an option. The President assured that leaders with concerns about the electoral process would be engaged in dialogue to reach a sustainable and inclusive solution.
President Hassan also acknowledged the international community’s significant support to Somalia, while stressing that the responsibility for national development ultimately rests with the Somali people.
“The world has delivered on what we requested, but unfinished work remains on our side. It is up to us, the Somali people, to move beyond the past and complete the task of building a fully functioning state,” said the President.
The National Consultative Conference brought together senior government officials, former political leaders, representatives from political parties, civil society organizations, and other dignitaries.
