Mogadishu, SONNA — The Federal Government of Somalia’s Minister of Defence, H.E. Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, held a press conference in Mogadishu today where he announced significant progress in the ongoing military campaign against the Kharijite militant group.
According to Minister Fiqi, coordinated ground offensives and airstrikes over the past 24 hours in the regions of Hiiraan, Middle Shabelle, Lower Shabelle, and Lower Juba resulted in the deaths of approximately 120 militants. The operations, executed by the Somali National Army (SNA) in collaboration with intelligence forces and international partners, targeted key hideouts and leadership figures within the group.
The Defence Minister revealed that fierce clashes are ongoing along the border of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle, where government forces have inflicted heavy losses on the militants. In Lower Juba alone, around 30 militants were reported killed, with several others captured for further investigation, including suspected mid-level commanders.
Minister Fiqi also highlighted a separate security operation in the Sabiid and Caanoole areas conducted by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). The raid resulted in the elimination of a senior militant leader responsible for orchestrating mortar attacks on Mogadishu, along with his armed entourage.
The Minister commended the role of local self-defense groups, known as the Macawiisley, particularly in Hiiraan region, for their unwavering commitment and courage in liberating areas from militant control. “Their determination and heroism have played a crucial role in weakening the Kharijite presence,” he stated.
In closing, Minister Fiqi urged Somali political leaders to refrain from divisive rhetoric that could undermine the national struggle. “This is a collective war for the future of Somalia. Politicians must stand with our armed forces and our people—not echo the voice of the enemy,” he warned.
The Somali government continues to intensify its efforts to dismantle the remaining militant networks and restore peace and stability across all regions.
