Somali National Army, with U.S. Support, Conducts Successful Operations Against al-Shabaab

Mogadishu, SONNA – The Somali National Army (SNA), with support from U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), conducted targeted operations and airstrikes on February 20, 2025. The mission, carried out near the Bulo Burte district in the Hiiraan region of Hirshabelle state, successfully thwarted al-Shabaab’s plans to launch a surprise attack on the area.

The joint operation marks a critical step in the ongoing efforts to dismantle al-Shabaab’s capabilities and disrupt its activities. The Somali government has been intensifying its campaign against extremist groups, including al-Shabaab and ISIS, which have inflicted widespread suffering on the Somali people and destabilized the region.

“This operation demonstrates the effectiveness of our partnership with international allies in the fight against terrorism,” said a spokesperson for the Somali government. “We are committed to eliminating these groups and ensuring the safety and security of our citizens.”

The collaboration between the Somali National Army and AFRICOM shows the global commitment to combating terrorism in Somalia. The United States and other international partners have been providing critical support to the Somali government, including intelligence sharing, training, and logistical assistance, as part of a broader strategy to counter terrorist threats.

Al-Shabaab has been responsible for numerous attacks on civilians, government institutions, and security forces in Somalia. The group’s activities have also posed a threat to regional and global security, making its eradication a priority for both Somali and international stakeholders.

The recent operation near Bulo Burte is part of a comprehensive strategy by the Federal Government of Somalia to weaken extremist groups and restore stability to the country. The government has vowed to continue its efforts, in collaboration with international partners, to eliminate the threat of terrorism and create a safer future for the Somali people.

As the Somali National Army and its allies press forward with their campaign, the success of this operation serves as a reminder of the importance of sustained cooperation in the fight against terrorism. The Somali government has called on the international community to remain committed in its support as it works to achieve lasting peace and security in the region.
