Somalia Warns of Legal Action Against Social Media Fueling Clan Conflicts

Mogadishu, SONNA — The Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia expresses deep regret over the consequences of the ongoing clan conflicts in various regions of the country.

The Ministry is closely monitoring social media platforms and media outlets being misused to fuel conflicts by individuals contributing to the incitement of violence.

The dissemination of videos, images, audio recordings, and distressing or inflammatory texts that exacerbate conflicts is prohibited under Islamic law, national laws, international regulations, and the policies of social media companies.

The Ministry, fulfilling its responsibilities, issues this warning to social media users engaging in creating unrest and inciting violence.

The government will take legal action to restrict any individual or platform used to escalate clan conflicts.

Every citizen today bears the responsibility of preventing the fueling of conflicts and working towards peace for our fellow brothers and sisters whose blood is being spilled.

We urge the Somali public to report platforms inciting violence to the Ministry, which can be sent via email at Info@moi.gov.so.

The Ministry appreciates the media outlets and social media users who are spreading positive and awareness-raising messages, as they set the good example needed today.

Finally, national law enforcement agencies, led by the police and the Attorney General’s Office, are on high alert to take appropriate measures during this period.
