Somalia and Tanzania Forge Stronger Ties with Landmark MOUs in Key Sectors

Mogadishu, Somalia, 19th December 2024 – The Federal Republic of Somalia and the United Republic of Tanzania have solidified their growing partnership with the signing of five landmark Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs). The agreements, signed in Mogadishu, cover foreign affairs, health, tourism, defense, and education, showcasing both nations’ commitment to fostering regional cooperation and sustainable development.

The event, presided over by Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama, underscores Somalia’s growing diplomatic engagement and Tanzania’s shared commitment to mutual progress.

Key Agreements Signed

1. General Cooperation in Foreign Affairs

The MOU between FM Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi and Tanzania’s Honourable Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo establishes a framework for enhanced diplomatic relations. This includes collaboration on regional stability, knowledge exchange, and coordinated efforts in international forums to promote peace and development.

2. Health Sector Collaboration

Somalia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Haji Adam Abubakar, and Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Health, Honourable Dr. Godwin Oloyce Mollel, signed an agreement focused on improving healthcare systems in both countries. The MOU emphasizes tackling communicable diseases, sharing expertise in public health, and strengthening healthcare delivery for underserved populations.

3. Tourism Development

Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, H.E. Daud Aweis Jama, and Tanzania’s Minister of Tourism and Natural Resources, Honourable Dr. Pindi Hazara Chana, signed an MOU to boost tourism. This agreement will promote cultural exchange, joint tourism marketing campaigns, and investment opportunities to showcase the unique heritage of both nations.

4. Defense and Security Cooperation

Somalia’s Minister of Defense, H.E. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, and his Tanzanian counterpart formalized an MOU aimed at strengthening defense collaboration. The agreement highlights capacity building, joint training programs, and cooperative efforts to enhance regional security and stability.

5. Education Cooperation

Somalia and Tanzania also signed an MOU on education cooperation, emphasizing the exchange of academic expertise, scholarships, and collaborative programs to strengthen the education systems in both countries. This agreement aims to empower youth through knowledge-sharing and capacity building, fostering sustainable development in both nations.

Remarks from Leaders

Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama, praised the agreements as a reflection of both nations’ shared aspirations:

“These MOUs are a testament to the strong relationship between Somalia and Tanzania. They lay the groundwork for economic growth, regional stability, and mutual prosperity for our people.”

FM Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi echoed these sentiments:

“The signing of these agreements highlights Somalia’s renewed commitment to regional collaboration. This partnership will bring tangible benefits to both our nations and inspire stronger ties across East Africa.”

Tanzania’s Honourable Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo expressed optimism about the partnership:

“Today marks a significant milestone in Tanzania-Somalia relations. These agreements pave the way for practical collaboration and shared progress across critical sectors.”

Strengthening Diplomatic Relations

This historic signing ceremony reflects Somalia’s growing leadership in regional diplomacy under the administration of H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as well as Tanzania’s active role in advancing East African cooperation. The agreements represent a shared vision for long-term development, security, and cultural exchange.
