Somali Disaster Management Agency Strengthens Ties with Turkish Humanitarian Organizations

Mogadishu, Somalia – In a significant step towards bolstering disaster preparedness and humanitarian response, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), led by Commissioner Mr. Mohamud Macallin Abdulle, held a pivotal meeting with the Ambassador of Turkey, Ambassador Alper Aktas, and heads of prominent Turkish institutions operating in Somalia.

The meeting, a follow-up to last year’s discussions in Turkey, centered on assessing the progress of ongoing projects and fulfilling commitments previously made. Key among the agenda items was the enhancement of emergency response capabilities, marked by the provision of critical assets such as ambulances and fire engines. The initiative also aims to empower Somali farmers, thereby strengthening the nation’s food security and resilience against natural calamities.

A notable outcome of the deliberations was the unanimous agreement on the need to escalate humanitarian assistance, especially during the Spring season, which is marred by the looming threat of floods leading to potential loss and social displacement. The assembly resolved to foster a closer collaboration to mitigate these risks effectively.

In a display of solidarity and support, Turkish humanitarian organizations, including the Turkish Diyanet Foundation and the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay), reaffirmed their commitment to channel their donations in alignment with the Somali Government’s oversight, ensuring that aid distribution is conducted with transparency and cognizance of the government’s policies.

This meeting marks a renewed dedication to a partnership that promises to bring about a tangible improvement in the lives of many Somalis, as both nations work hand in hand to face the challenges ahead.
