Government of Somalia Facilitates the Repatriation of 174 Somali Nationals from Libya

MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Government of Somalia has successfully facilitated the safe return of 174 Somali youth from severe security and humanitarian conditions in Libya. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Hassan Mohamed Ali, officially received the returning citizens at Mogadishu’s international airport today, directly neutralizing the immediate threats these individuals faced from illicit human trafficking networks and illegal detention.

This successful extraction is the direct result of targeted diplomatic maneuvering by the state. The mission was initiated following recent bilateral engagements in Libya conducted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Abdisalan Abdi Ali. By actively leveraging these established diplomatic channels, the government secured the release and safe transit of citizens who had previously been subjected to extreme hardship and exploitation.

Executing this complex logistical return required absolute inter-agency synchronization. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Diaspora Department coordinated the operation in strict alignment with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the European Union, and the Somali Embassy in Libya. Upon arrival, the state immediately deployed emergency triage protocols, providing the returnees with comprehensive medical assessments, temporary housing, and essential psychological support.

The government is currently advancing robust domestic reintegration programs to ensure these individuals transition securely into the national workforce. This facilitation operation explicitly demonstrates Mogadishu’s operational capability to defend its citizens globally while actively degrading the appeal of illicit migration routes through the expansion of domestic economic opportunities.
