Somalia’s Deputy PM condemns Ethiopia-Somaliland deal on maritime

SONNA – Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama has denounced the agreement signed by Ethiopia and Somaliland on January 1, 2024, that gives Ethiopia access to use a large part of Somalia’s sea.

The agreement, announced by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi in Addis Ababa, was described by Jama as a “clear and aggressive violation of the sovereignty, nationalism, independence, and territorial unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia”.

Jama said that the Ethiopian government’s decision has sparked a wave of patriotism and unity among the Somali people, who have expressed their rejection of the deal and their support for the Somali government.

He added that the agreement is also a breach of international law and the principles of the United Nations and the African Union, and that it threatens the stability and security of the region.

“The Somali people have unitedly expressed their feelings towards the aggression and provocation of the Ethiopian government against the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia. They have united against any interference to the nationalism, territorial unity, and independence of Somalia,” Jama said.

He urged the Somali people to defend their land and sea from any foreign invasion, and to stand in solidarity with the Somali government in its diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute peacefully.
