Somali Parliament Rejects Somaliland-Ethiopia Deal MOGADISHU (SONNA): The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, convened an extraordinary meeting of the two Houses of the Parliament on Thursday, in accordance with the country’s constitution. The meeting was chaired by the Speaker of the House of the People, Mr. Sheikh Adan Mohamed Noor (Madobobe), and attended by the Speaker of the Upper House, Mr. Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, and the Deputies of both Houses.

The Speaker of the House of the People, who addressed the meeting, said that the agenda was to discuss the position of the Federal Government of Somalia on the protection of territorial integrity and the future of the nation. He said that the agreement signed in Addis Ababa between the President of Somaliland and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia was against the international law, and the regulations of the African Union, IGAD, Arab League and United Nations.

The President of Somalia, who also spoke at the meeting, urged the Ethiopian government to respect the sovereignty of Somalia and not to violate the borders and rules of the world, IGAD and the African Union. He said that the agreement was null and void and that Somalia would not accept it.

After the President’s speech, the Members of the House of the People had a serious debate on the deal between Somaliland and Ethiopia. They denounced the agreement as a false and illegitimate one, and declared that the water and land of Somalia would not be compromised. They also affirmed their commitment to uphold the order of the world and the institutions of the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, IGAD and Somalia. Both Houses of the Parliament unanimously passed a law to reject the agreement today.
