MOGADISHU (SONNA) – A high-level delegation from the Republic of Türkiye, led by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, H.E. Durmuş Ünüvar, arrived at the Mogadishu Port on Tuesday to initiate a new phase of bilateral cooperation focused on critical maritime infrastructure. The visit aims to accelerate joint development projects and reinforce the strategic economic partnership between the two nations.

The Turkish delegation was received with full diplomatic protocol by senior Somali officials, including the State Minister of the Federal Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport, H.E. Mohamed Abdulkadir Dhucle, and the Director General of Mogadishu Port, Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur “Americo.” The welcoming committee also included deputy directors of the port authority and senior security officials.

Following the reception, Deputy Minister Ünüvar, accompanied by the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Alper Aktaş, and executives from the Albayrak Group—the Turkish conglomerate responsible for the port’s management—conducted a comprehensive technical inspection of the facility. The tour covered key operational zones, including the container terminal and cargo handling sections, where the delegation assessed the efficiency of recent modernizations and identified areas for further expansion.

The visiting officials are scheduled to hold extensive strategy sessions with the leadership of Somalia’s Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport. These high-level meetings will center on advancing technical cooperation and finalizing plans for new infrastructure initiatives designed to boost the port’s capacity. The agenda prioritizes the implementation of advanced logistics systems to position Mogadishu as a competitive trade hub in the Horn of Africa.

Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur emphasized that the collaboration with Türkiye has been a driving force behind the port’s transformation into a modern economic engine. The presence of Deputy Minister Ünüvar signals a renewed commitment from Ankara to support Somalia’s long-term development goals through direct investment and expertise transfer.

This visit highlights the robust and enduring alliance between Somalia and Türkiye. The partnership has consistently delivered tangible results in security, construction, and humanitarian aid, with the Mogadishu Port standing as a primary example of successful economic cooperation. The ongoing joint initiatives at the port are expected to significantly increase national revenue and facilitate smoother international trade flows for the Somali business community.
