Mogadishu, Somalia – Three members of the Al-Shabaab Khawarij group have surrendered to Somali security forces and the National Intelligence Service. The defections occurred in the South-West regional administration, specifically in the city of Baidoa.
The defectors, identified as Ibrahim Hussein Mohamed, Nur Mohamed Abukar, and Yare Ali Hussein, were previously part of Al-Shabaab cells operating in Bay, Bakool, Lower Shabelle, and Hiraan regions. Their decision to surrender was motivated by the harsh conditions they faced while living in areas controlled by the extremist group.
In their statements, the former militants highlighted the difficulties of life under Al-Shabaab’s rule and urged their comrades still with the terror organization to follow suit and surrender to the government forces.
