Supreme Court Annuls Galmudug Assembly and Local Council Election Results

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — Somalia’s Supreme Court has annulled the results of the combined elections for the Galmudug House of Representatives and Local Councils, according to Supreme Court Chief Justice Baashe Yusuf Ahmed.
The court ruled, after hearing the parties and reviewing the arguments and evidence presented, that the elections held on 30 July 2026 were not conducted in accordance with Somalia’s Constitution and Electoral Law and that their results therefore have no legal validity.
The Supreme Court ordered the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) to organise new elections for the Galmudug House of Representatives and Local Councils at the earliest feasible time, in accordance with the Constitution, Electoral Law and relevant regulations.
To ensure continuity of government services and protect the public interest, the court further ordered existing institutions to remain in office until new bodies are established through legally compliant elections.
